dilate (verb) make or become larger; speak or write in detail.

When a part of your body becomes larger, or something makes it larger, it is dilated. When you experience fear or surprise, your eyes dilate, that is, they become larger, or wider. Blood vessels dilate when they become larger. On getting a strong smell, your nostrils are dilated, that is, they are enlarged.

  • Before testing Harry's vision, Dr. Smith put a few drops of a lotion in his eyes, to dilate the pupils, so that he could better examine them.
  • Seeing the young boy knocked down by the speeding car, Felix's eyes, wide open, stared at the sight. His eyes remained dilated as he stood there in a speechless shock.
