dilettante (noun) a person not seriously interested or knowing well the subject they study, especially the arts.

A dilettante pretends interest in, or does not study seriously a subject they claim interest in. They do not study any subject seriously, especially the arts, in which sometimes they pretend interest. They know very little about the subject. They are dabblers.

  • Benny's claims to be a serious student of painting are not supported either by a thorough knowledge of painting or by paintings of any worth.
  • Bernard is no dilettante, though many think so. He has abiding interest in sculpture and some of his sculptures have won him awards too.
