dirge (noun) a funeral song; any slow and mournful song or piece of music.

(In the past) A song at a funeral or over the death of a person was a dirge. The song expressed the singers' grief over the death of the person. Any song or a piece of music which is slow, mournful, and boring is also referred to as a dirge.

  • The dirge they sang at the funeral of the young girl was really moving and filled everyone there with sorrow.
  • The sorrowful and slow tune the violin band played on the joyous occasion sounded like a dirge mourning someone's death.
