disband (verb) (of an organization or a group) break up; dissolve.
When an organization, a group, an army, a committee, etc., are disbanded or disband, they do not function as a group anymore. The members separate and do not form a group. The group no longer exists in the form of a group. An army is disbanded, when the soldiers no longer fight together under anybody's command. A committee is disbanded if it is dissolved.
- After the collapse of the former Soviet Union, the Red Army was disbanded along with the KGB, the Soviet secret police. Some of the officers and men of the Red Army and the KGB were given punishments, and others were disqualified from holding any position.
- The terrorist group disbanded after the security forces' repeated raids on their camps and hideouts, and the freezing of their bank accounts by the government.
