disburse (verb) pay or distribute money to someone from a large amount collected or available for a purpose.

When you disburse money to earthquake victims as a relief measure, you pay them the money from the funds collected or available for the purpose. When salaries are paid, they are disbursed form the money meant for the purpose. 'A hundred thousand dollars has been disbursed so far for the slum clearance schemes.' This means that out of the funds allotted for the purpose, a hundred thousand dollars has been paid.

  • The accounts department has yet to prepare the accounts for the funds the company has disbursed for the research and development project, as those to whom the money has been paid have yet to submit the accounts.
  • All the money allotted for the social welfare schemes has been completely disbursed for the year, with nearly ten thousand people having received the benefit.
