disconsolate (adj) terribly sad; extremely sorrowful.

A child that has lost its mother is disconsolate, that is, it is full of sorrow. None can console it. A team with expectations of victory is disconsolate if it loses the match, that is, it is extremely disappointed. A disconsolate person is extremely sad, or utterly disappointed.

  • Disconsolate at the death of her husband and her only son in the plane crash, Cindy in her desperation attempted suicide, by swallowing sleeping pills.
  • The boy stood disconsolate at the site of the accident where his father's body lay dead by the car hit by the truck. There was none to comfort him until the police arrived on the scene.
