discordant (adj) not combining properly (of sounds, objects, ideas, etc.).

A discordant sound is that produced by a bad combination of sounds in an orchestra. A discordant sound is a harsh and unpleasant sound, that doesn't mix properly with the other sounds. When something does not combine well with other things around it, it is discordant. A badly-dressed and unkempt person in the company of well-dressed and smart persons appears discordant. An old building decorated in a modern way appears discordant. A discordant voice is that of a person who does not agree with others.

  • The catholic bishop in the group of the drunkards appeared rather discordant.
