discourse (noun) a formal discussion (of a serious topic in speech/writing).

When you attend a discourse, you attend a serious lecture on or discussion of a serious topic like religion, politics, culture, morals, etc.. You read the discourses too, as discourses can be in writing too. A formal discussion of a serious topic in writing is a discourse. A series of discourses on the Bible, for example, is a series of lectures or writings on matters related to the Bible.

  • Rev. John Higgs’ discourse on theology and myth was very enlightening as people listening to it came to know some interesting facts that they had not known earlier.
  • One should be a patient listener or reader to enjoy discourses and benefit from them. For discourses are serious discussions, mostly of abstract topics.
