discrete (adj) separate; independent of one another.

When two or more things of the same type are separate, that is, totally different from one another, they are discrete. Discrete species of organisms are different species each independent of, and separate from the other. A discrete set of toffees are an assorted set of toffees, each of a different flavor.

  • Those who gathered at the convention of musicians were a discrete group, each section among them specializing in a type of music different from that of others.
  • They were all from discrete backgrounds, as they were of different cultures, yet they had one thing in common - the propagation of peace.
