disinter (verb) dig up; unearth (usually a dead body).
When a dead body is dug up from the place of its burial, for a postmortem, for example, resulting from suspicion about the cause and circumstances of death, it is disinterred. To find out a secret and expose it is also to disinter.
- The judge ordered the body of the victim to be disinterred, which the police, to help the culprit, have cleverly managed to bury without postmortem.
- When the Nazis were unable to bury the large number of dead bodies for lack of space, they used to disinter the bodies of already buried victims and burn them.
