dismantle (verb) take apart.

You dismantle a machine if you separate its parts, that is, take the machine apart, perhaps for repairs, and then refit them together. When you dismantle a piece of furniture, you separate its various parts so that you can carry them easily. A system or an organization is dismantled, if it is ended over a period. Elections dismantle some of the sitting legislators. That is, elections end their tenure. An existing tax system may be dismantled, if it is ended in course of time, gradually.

  • Many people feel that the system of religious offices being held for life should be dismantled, and that people be appointed for fixed terms.
  • After the factory was shut down all the items of plant and machinery were dismantled, and sold part by part.
