dismiss (verb) refuse to consider (ideas, opinions, etc.); reject.

When you dismiss your friend's suggestion that you start a business, which you think does not suit you, you dismiss his suggestion; that is, you refuse to consider it. When you don't accept someone's advice, you dismiss it as unwise, if you feel it is unwise. When you find someone's words totally ridiculous, you dismiss them as nonsense, that is, you refuse to consider them worthy of listening to. When you dismiss an employee, you send him away or remove them from a job. You dismiss a student from school, in case they are a student.

  • Harry was dismissed from job as the charges of swindling government funds were proved against him.
  • The ruling party was charged with many cases of corruption but the chief of the ruling party dismissed the allegations as baseless.
