disparage (verb) belittle.

When you talk low of a person to make it appear that they are not as great or important as they are supposed to be, you disparage them. You talk disrespectfully of them if you disparage them. Often persons in positions of power are disparaged by their rivals, that is, the rivals talk insultingly of them.

  • Henry had disparaged his wife Joan so much that unable to bear his attempts to belittle her and her actions, she filed for a divorce.
  • It is out of envy that most people disparage those occupying high positions. They cannot bear to see people whom they consider in no way superior to them occupying high positions which are denied to them.
