disperse (verb) scatter.
People disperse after a meeting; that is, the meeting over, each one goes their way. A large crowd disperses, if it melts, and there is no longer any crowd. Students disperse after class; that is, they go away. Seeds are dispersed if they are scattered over an area.
- A crowd protesting against the new foreign policy gathered in front of the foreign secretary's office and dispersed only after the secretary assured them of reconsideration.
- The police had to burst tear gas shell to disperse the unruly crowd protesting against the hike in oil prices.
