When you are dispirited, you are discouraged and are without hope or enthusiasm, because, in spite of your best efforts, you could not achieve what you have wanted to. Your lack of success despite your best and repeated efforts dispirits you, that is, strongly discourages you and takes away your enthusiasm. A team losing a prestigious match returns home dispirited; that is, they return home discouraged, unenthusiastic, and tired.
