dissemble (verb) pretend.

A person dissembles if they pretend. When you hide your real feelings, ideas, desires, etc., and put on a false expression you dissemble. You dissemble interest in something, when you appear to be interested in it, without being really interested in it. You dissemble sorrow when without feeling real sorrow, you seem to be sorrowful.

  • Politicians, being what they are, are very good at dissembling. They dissemble interest in people’s welfare, when they are only interested in themselves, their wealth, and their staying in power.
  • That she was dissembling interest in the professor's paper was quite evident. She attended the seminar not because she really cared to, but just to impress the professor.
