dissent (verb) disagree.

A person dissents when they disagree with the official opinion of a party, of the cabinet, a group, etc., or with the majority opinion. A person dissents if they disagree with the opinion of the established church. Dissenting groups are groups of people expressing their disagreement with the majority or the official opinion. A judge dissents when they disagree with the opinion of the other judges on the bench.

  • Charles Smith dissented with the opinion of the majority of the party on moral grounds, and would rather leave the party than continue in it with differences with it.
  • The judgment was in Charles' favor with one of the judges dissenting with the two others on the bench.
