dissident (adj) disagreeing and very critical.

Dissidents are people who disagree with and criticize strongly their government or party, especially in countries where such disagreement is not allowed. Rebels where rebellion is not tolerated are dissidents.

  • The virtue of democracy lies in assuring all freedom of expression to dissident groups. Even if the dissidents are in a minority they have the right to express their dissent.
  • Stalin suppressed all dissidents in Soviet Russia by having them mercilessly executed. If they were not executed they were at least prosecuted. Trotsky was the most important among the victims of the Stalin regime.
