dissimulate (verb) pretend; hide (one's feelings, etc.).

When a person dissimulates, they pretend, they hide their real feelings. They appear different from what they are, to mislead people. For example, they pretend love for others, when they may not love them at all. They may put on a bold face and appear cheerful when they are disappointed and dejected.

  • Charlie dissimulates great respect for the professor as long as he in his presence, but ridicules and disparages him behind his back.
  • Very poor at dissimulating, Clara could not convince anyone that she was thoroughly disappointed at her defeat. Her smile could not hide her tears.
