dissonance (noun) harsh sound produced by discord among a number of musical instruments; lack of agreement.

A bad combination of musical notes in an orchestra is dissonance. If the instruments together produce an unpleasant sound because they do not play the same note, dissonance is the result. Dissonance is very harsh and jarring to the ear. Dissonance is the lack of agreement between opinions. If a wife and husband differ seriously there is dissonance between them. Voices of dissonance are those of the people having differences with the others.

  • Pop music has dissonance as part of it, as the instruments quite often play different notes producing harshness which is a feature of this kind of music.
  • The increase in the number of divorces points to the growing dissonance between marriage partners caused by a lack of tolerance of difference of opinions and attitudes.
