dissuade (verb) advice against; persuade against.

When you advice people against, say, smoking, you dissuade them from smoking. When you persuade a person against buying a car, you dissuade them from buying it. Doctors dissuade us from drinking alcohol, that is, they advice us against taking alcohol.

  • The mother dissuaded the son from a career in the armed forces, so he dropped the idea, and started an industry.
  • Though the doctor has dissuaded Paul from smoking, he has not given it up, so he now faces a serious health problem with persistent lung trouble.
