distill (verb) purify (a liquid).
When we make a liquid pure by heating it until it turns into a vapor and then cool it, we distill it. Water is distilled this way for use in scientific experiments and in medical treatment. Strong alcoholic drinks are also prepared by distillation of the raw material. That is why the places where liquor is manufactured are called distilleries. Essences of flowers and other aromatic substances are obtained by distillation. When the gist of an elaborate speech or a piece of writing is prepared, it is distilled from the speech or writing. Knowledge is distilled from long years of experience; that is, we obtain knowledge from our experience.
