distinction (noun) a clear difference or contrast; the quality of excellence; the quality of being special; separation of people into groups; a special grade or mark.

A clear difference or contrast between two related things is a distinction. For example, there is distinction between an ape and a monkey though they look similar. That is, despite their similarity, there are clear differences between the two. The quality of being excellent is also distinction. Shakespeare was a writer of distinction. So is Andre Agassi a player of distinction; that is, Shakespeare was a writer of excellence, and so is Andre Agassi a player of excellence. The quality of being special is also a distinction. Sachin Tendulkar of India has the distinction of scoring the maximum number of centuries in test cricket as well as in one day matches, at a very young age. Showing difference between one set of people and another is to make a distinction between the two. We should not make a distinction between the rich and the poor in matters of treatment. That is, we should not show any difference in treating the two groups of people. Distinction in an examination is to score a very high percentage of marks or a very high score. 'She passed with distinction.' This means, she passed with a very high score of marks.

  • We shall always make a distinction between a popular movie and an artistically good movie, for a popular movie need not necessarily have high artistic values.
