doctrinaire (adj) going strictly by theory or principle; dogmatic.

When you insist on doing something strictly according to theory or principle, even when problems arise because of it, you are doctrinaire. When you think your beliefs or opinions are correct and do not think of the problems arising out of them, you are doctrinaire. You are not practical. A doctrinaire argument is an argument in support of a theory. A doctrinaire communist goes strictly by the theory of communism.

  • The doctrinaire father would not hear of his son's marrying outside the church, though the church was too small to accommodate the invitees.
  • The doctrinaire capitalism in the US, leaving everything to market forces, though assures liberty, leads to cut-throat competition, and a lack of human feelings in pursuit of wealth.
