dolorous (adj) extremely sad; sorrowful.

A dolorous person is in deep sorrow, and a dolorous child is a very sad child and weeps. A dolorous wail is a mournful sound. Being in deep sorrow is being dolorous. The members of a family are dolorous if one of the members dies.

  • The maniac leaving the two children in a pool of blood plunged the family into a dolorous state. Their sorrow, as can be imagined, was unbearable.
  • The earthquake that claimed thousands of lives left almost every family in the region in a dolorous condition. Even after weeks they were unable to overcome the sorrow caused by the devastation.
