downcast (adj) looking down; sad or depressed.
When you look downwards out of embarrassment, or because you are ashamed, you are downcast. When a person is very sad or depressed they are downcast. 'The little girl is downcast as she misses her mother a lot.' This means, the child is very sad because she cannot bear to be away from her mother.
