drone (verb) make a continuous, low, dull sound; speak boringly for a long time.

A plane drones as it flies high above, we hear its low dull sound. The places near an airport may be continuously disturbed by the planes droning above. That is, they make a low continuous sound that disturbs them. When a person talks continuously for a long time in a monotonous fashion, they drone on. They are not just bothered whether others are listen to them or not, whether they are tiring others. Usually bores and old people drone on if only they have listeners.

  • Planes droned quite frequently in the place and we were later told that a number of plane companies operated flights to and from the place.
  • With his eyes closed, the old man droned on, talking of his childhood and youth, without noticing that some of us had started dozing as it was late in the night.
