dumbfound (verb) astonish; amaze.

When a piece of shocking news or a shocking sight makes you speechless, it dumbfounds you. A wife is dumbfounded if right in her presence her husband is killed, as it happened in the case of President John Kennedy who was shot right in Jacqueline Kennedy's presence. You are dumbfounded if you see a child knocked down by a speeding truck. That is, the shock makes you speechless.

  • The government's withdrawal of its populist schemes soon after it was returned to power dumbfounded the voters who had not expected such a turn around by it.
  • Kim, who has been a mediocre all along, dumbfounded his teachers, his parents, and his classmates, when he scored 'A' grades in all the subjects.
