edict (noun) an official order or statement issued by someone in power, especially by a ruler.

An edict prohibiting the export of goods is an official order against exporting goods. An edict against the free movement of people is an official order by a ruler restricting the free movement of the people. Edicts were issued by rulers of the past, and the violation of the edicts was dealt with severely.

  • Some of the edicts issued by the old sovereigns continued for centuries, and those issued by emperor Ashoka of India inform all people that the emperor would be ready at any time of the day to dispense justice and redress any grievance.
  • The sovereign issued an edict that no one in his kingdom marry unless permitted by a royal order.
