edify (verb) instruct.

To improve someone's morals or intellect by instructing them is to edify. A preacher intends to edify his parishioners by his preaching; that is, their intention in preaching is to improve the morals of the parishioners. A book edifies if it can improve the mind of the readers. A movie edifies, while, in addition to entertaining, it improves the knowledge of the spectators.

  • The book seeks to edify the readers about the right manner of devotion by insisting that service to fellow persons is service to God.
  • The parents have a responsibility to edify their erring children by instructing them in proper behavior and right attitudes, so that they grow up as responsible citizens.
