eerie (adj) (of atmosphere, silence, etc.) strange, mysterious, and frightening.

An eerie atmosphere is circumstances that are strange, frightening, and mysterious. The silence of a detached, old, and large building when you are alone there in the middle of the night causes a strange and frightening feeling in you. That is eerie silence for you. In such a situation you imagine you see ghosts also.

  • The eerie silence of the large building away from all other buildings, when the power broke down at midnight made a chill run down my spine, as I was alone there, and I thought that I saw some moving shapes too.
  • The deserted streets of the town gave me an eerie feeling that I would find something scary, and I wished with all my heart that I had the company of at least one other soul.
