effete (adj) (of a person or a system) weakened, no longer powerful; a man looking and behaving like a woman.

An effete system is no longer as powerful as it has been. An effete organization is a dying organization. Slavery in the northern states of the US had been effete by the time President Lincoln decided to end it altogether. That is, by the time President Lincoln decided to abolish slavery there, it had become weak in the northern states. An effete intellectual is no longer the mentally active person they have been. A man is effete if he looks like and behaves like a woman. An effete young man is a weak young man behaving like a woman.

  • Marxism is nonexistent in Russia, whereas in China it is effete as is seen in the free market system prevailing in parts of the Republic.
  • Nothing appears capable of bringing back the sanctity of the institution of marriage which has become effete with the rampant promiscuity of the modern society and the easy way a divorce can be obtained.
