effusive (adj) expressing too much of feeling.

When you are effusive you are too expressive of your too deeply experienced feeling. You are not content with expressing your overmuch of feeling in a few words. 'Henry was effusive in his welcoming us.' This means that he welcomed us very warmly, perhaps too warmly. She was effusive in her love for him - that is, she felt and showed too much of love for him.

  • She was very effusive in welcoming guests, so it was surprising to hear that she had been cold to Sam and did not entertain him.
  • If you are very effusive in your friendship, you make your friend feel embarrassed at the excessive friendship you show.
