embroil (verb) (often passive) be involved in a quarrel, argument, or dispute.

When you are embroiled in argument with someone, you and they have a heated argument. You are embroiled in a dispute if you have a quarrel with someone. When a person finds themselves in a difficult situation, they are embroiled in it.

  • The social worker who went to rescue a twelve-year old boy from a sweatshop found herself embroiled in a legal dispute with the parents of the boy.
  • Most of the third world nations are in troubles, as they find themselves embroiled in civil wars, famine and starvation deaths.
