emetic (noun) substance causing vomiting.

When you take an emetic it makes you vomit the food or drink you have taken. Emetics are usually drugs which are prescribed to make a patient throw out what they have eaten or drunk if it doesn’t agree with them.

  • Ancient doctors believed that vomiting would remove infections from the patients and often prescribed emetics as a remedy for any infection.
  • When Jenny swallowed a poison pill to commit suicide, her husband rushed her to the hospital, where a doctor gave her an emetic to make her vomit the poison.
