empathy (noun) ability to understand another personís feelings, problems, etc.

You have empathy with another person when you understand their feelings, problems etc. When you imagine yourself in their position and understand their reactions to a situation, you have empathy for them. A doctor has empathy with their patients, that is, they place themselves in their patientís position and experience what they suffer. A writer has empathy with their subject if the writer is really great.
