empirical (adj) based on experience and experiment.

Empirical knowledge is knowledge derived from experience or experiment. It is the opposite of theoretical knowledge. Empirical evidence is evidence gathered from an experiment or actual experience. Empirical research is the verification of research findings by applying them to real life experience or by experimentation. An empirical study is the study of how a theory works in actual situations.

  • The more one studies the Theory of Relativity of Einstein, the more empirical one finds the theory, as it is found to be true in real life situations.
  • Most of the theories and concepts about atoms and molecules have been formulated on empirical evidence, verifiable by experiment or experience.
