encipher (verb) encode, convert a message into a code.

When you send a message in the form of a code so that it is secret and can be understood by only the person for whom it is meant, you encipher it. Military messages and highly sensitive information are enciphered; that is, they are always in code language and are understood by only those who are trained in it.

  • The purpose of the invention of the electronic computer was to decipher fast messages that were sent enciphered by the German high command to its spies.
  • The military usually communicates critical information completely enciphered so that the secrecy of the information is protected.
