enclave (noun) an area in a city, country, etc., with a group of people of a language and culture surrounded by a larger group of people of another language, culture; a colony in a foreign country.

A group of people having a different way of life from that of the larger group of people around them is an enclave. For example, if you find a concentration of Italians in an area in a US city like New York, the area is the Italian enclave. A diplomatic enclave is the area in which all diplomats have their offices and residences in a country.

  • China Town in the USA is an enclave where you find a concentration of Chinese immigrants.
  • When a nation encourages immigrants, enclaves of different nationalities spring up in its big cities, forming little islands of those nationalities.
