encomium (noun) great praise; eulogy.

When you praise someone highly you pay encomiums to them. Your speech is full of encomiums for someone if your speech is full of praise for them. Encomiums are showered on someone, if they are praised very highly.

  • Henry had such praise for his fatherís great achievements that he wrote a poem full of encomiums for him.
  • Encomiums paid to people are not always sincere. For example, when a person wants a favor from someone in power, they praise them, obviously not out of sincere admiration.
