enigmatic (adj) puzzling; mysterious.

A person or a situation is enigmatic if it is puzzling and is difficult to understanding. A person’s words are enigmatic; their behavior is enigmatic, if you cannot understand them. An enigmatic situation is difficult to manage because you do not understand its nature and the way to manage it.

  • Oliver Goldsmith, the famous writer of prose, remains even today the most enigmatic figure in English literature. A man of genius and wisdom like him leading a dissolute life – this puzzles every one.
  • The oil giant was confused when its rival with equal or even a better share of the market offered to merge with it. The situation proved very enigmatic to the oil giant, as they were not clear about what lay behind the offer of merger.
