epic (noun) a long narrative in prose or verse, about a great hero.

A long story in verse or prose or a film recounting the adventures of a great hero or heroes or of a great event is an epic. It is usually a story of great proportions, every thing about it being grand. Homerís Iliad, the story of the Helen of Troy, is considered the first epic in European history. Miltonís Paradise Lost is a great epic.

  • An epic is necessarily very long as it includes descriptions of great events that may form part of a nationís ancient history.
  • The Titanic is an epic of a movie presenting in great detail the tragedy that overtook the Titanic on its maiden voyage.
