epigram (noun) a sort, witty and clever phrase.
A wise idea put in a short and amusing sentence or phrase is an epigram. An epigram usually arrests our attention by the brevity with which a great truth is conveyed. It is witty, that is, it is amusing too. “One, who laughs last, lasts,” is a good example of an epigram.
- The works of Francis Bacon, the foremost of the English essayists are full of epigrams. His way of writing is terse and witty.
- Brevity is the soul of wit, and nothing equals an epigram in its brevity and in its being packed with wisdom and wit.
