episodic (adj) happening occasionally; consisting of a number of different and separate things.

Episodic occurrence is occasional occurrence; that is, happening now and then. An episodic attack of disease is the occasional, not a regular attack of a disease. An episodic headache is not a regular but an occasional headache. A novel is episodic if it consists of a number of separate and different events. An episodic account of a war is a number of incidents each independent in itself and put together in the form of a narrative.

  • The author appears to have intended the novel to be episodic for each chapter appears to be independent of the other with only a lose connection between them.
  • Jeff’s educational career was episodic with a number of interruptions between years of study at school and college. In spite of that he has earned a doctorate and heads the department at the university.
