epitaph (noun) inscription on a grave about the dead person.

When a grave is erected over the place of a person’s burial, we find inscribed on the grave stone, in addition to the dates of birth and death, some words telling us about the important aspect of the person’s life. These words engraved on the grave stone are called the epitaph. “Here lies one who gave all his to the country,” is the epitaph on the grave stone of the leader. That is, they are the words inscribed on the grave stone of the leader.

  • “None before him gave so much for friendship,” are words Stephen got written as the epitaph on the grave of his dear friend, Geoff.
  • Epitaphs caused to be inscribed by the near and dear of the deceased reveal the love and affection they have for the dead person.
