erode (verb) destroy gradually.

If the wind, weather and sea destroy gradually the surface of soil or rock, they erode it. The sea coast is eroded, if the sea gradually cuts into it. Rocks are eroded if by constant contact with the sea, their surfaces are worn away. If the surface of the soil is destroyed by the wind, the soil is eroded. When someoneís power, rights, confidence and the like are gradually lessened they are eroded. When a person loses confidence in themselves, their confidence is eroded. When a governmentís actions reduce the rights of the people, their rights are eroded. Inflation erodes the value of money, that is, money loses its value. The credibility of a person is eroded, if people lose their belief in them.

  • A number of buildings along the beach have been found sinking because of the erosion of the coast by the sea.
  • Annís repeated failures to be a singer have eroded her confidence so much that she no longer wants even to make an attempt, for fear of another failure.
