expropriate (verb) (a government) taking away private property for public use; take away someone’s property illegally.

A government expropriates private land, buildings, etc., if it takes them away for public use. If one’s property is taken by the government for use for public purposes, it is expropriated. If someone occupies someone else’s property illegally for their own use, they expropriate the property. If someone takes away by force or otherwise illegally the property belonging to others, they expropriate it.

  • The old age home was built on a five acre site expropriated by the government from a ten acre area belonging to a local resident.
  • Most of the properties enjoyed by the Mafia gangs in the US are those expropriated by them by threats and by force from their owners.
