extant (adj) still existing.

A very old thing, a species of animal or any living being still existing is extant. Some portion of an old fort, for example, is extant, if it still stands. We know about ancient civilizations, very old cities, etc., because we find in their excavations, some structures belonging to them still extant, that is, still remaining, some of them intact. An animal species is extant if it is not extinct. If old manuscripts and old books are extant, they are preserved only in libraries and are not available for sale.

  • The archeologists were delighted to some portions of the old city extant. The building and articles found in them, they hope, would give them an idea of the way of living of the people of the times.
  • The great authorís manuscript extant in a small library in a distant town, it is hoped, will give an idea of the authorís earlier writings.
