extemporaneous (also extempore) (adj) offhand, spoken or done without preparation.

An extemporaneous speech is a speech which you make without preparation. A song is extemporaneous if it is sung without preparation or rehearsal. A poem composed and recited on the spur of the moment, offhand, is an extemporaneous poem. An extemporaneous performance on the stage is the act of performing on the stage, without preparation or a rehearsal, a role from a play, a recital of a song or an item of dance.

  • Name a role from any of the great plays, and Nichols performs it then and there. He is a gifted actor who is very good at that kind of extemporaneous performance.
  • Nelsonís extemporaneous speeches are more effective, less elaborate and more easily understood than his prepared speeches.
