extort (verb) get something especially money from others by force and threats.
To force others to give you something especially money by threatening them is to extort it from them. Mafia gangs extort money from business magnates; that is, they make the business magnates pay up by threatening to kill them or in some other way harm them. Some times police extort confessions from suspects by torturing them. That is, on the pain of torture the prisoners are made to confess.
- The gang extorted huge amounts of money from film stars, and it would have gone on, had not one of the film stars boldly reported the matter to the police.
- Though the police had extorted a confession from the prisoner, he told the judge that the police obtained the confession from him by torturing him.
